Khao Yai National Park

The Khao Yai National Park is the third largest park in Thailand located only 2 hours 30 away from Bangkok. It covers an area of 2 168 square kilometres and you can see there a large wildlife including elephants, deers, gibbons, macaques, hornbills that you will most probably be able to see as well some more dangerous animals as asian wild dogs (dholes), cobras, asiatic black bears and even tigers!

If you are willing to get a trip there, I would say that there are 3 ways to visit this park:

  • Visiting by yourself

As you can go into the park by car (a main road goes through it), you can definitely visit the park by yourself.

I recommend this option for anyone, and especially families, willing to spend one day within nature seeing waterfalls (accessible by car and then a short walk) and nice points of view. You will have the chance as well to see deers (you can find many of them next to Visitor Centre) and maybe macaques and elephants on the road.

Price: 50 Bahts per car and 400 Bahts per person for the park entrance.

  • Booking a 1 or 2 day(s) tour

Many companies offer now one day, one day and a half or two days tours. This is the best if you don’t have much time but still want to experience the jungle. You will for sure get the best out of it with a professional guide that will be able to spot animals for you, explain you how the jungle works…

Personally, I did a tour with “Bobbys Jungle Tours” and I would definitely recommend any one to go with them. Our guide “Mr Sexy” was speaking perfectly English and really did his best for us to have a great experience. The tour includes a 2-3 hours walk into the jungle and the visit of the main spots of the park by car.

Therefore, remember that the Khao Yai National Park is a popular place for locals and foreigners so it can get really crowded on the weekends. Thus, I recommend you to go on week days.

Price: 1300 Bahts per person for a 1 day tour, including the park entrance, lunch and transfer from/to the guesthouse. “Bobbys Jungle Tours” offers as well great accommodation with spacious and clean rooms (from 200 to 300 Bahts) and also good food.

  • Spending 2 or more days in the jungle

If you have more time and are adventurous, you can then spend two or more days in “the deep jungle” sleeping there overnight! This requires a bit more of logistics, as you need a guide with you (you don’t want to get lost there!), a gun holder man (you never know which animals you are going to see! Bears and tigers are present in the park) and you have to carry your food and tent. This is of course more expensive and you have to be ready to walk several hours in a row.

Price: around 6000-7000 Bahts for two days and one night.

How to get there?

The Khao Yai National Park is easy to reach from Bangkok. You first have to go to Pak Chong.  By minivan is a good option as it will only cost you 160 Bahts per person and take 2 hours and a half. You can get one at the Mo Chit bus station (North one) or Victory Monument (BTS exit number 4, go straight and turn left few meters right after the stairs. You will find here the minivans going to Pak Chong).

Some tips:

  • Don’t forget to bring with you insects repellent
  • If you want to walk by yourself into the jungle, you will need leech socks (provided with tours or can be bought at the Visitor Centre)
